Adding Dimensions to Creative Nonfiction, Weekend Retreat
Adding Dimensions to Creative Nonfiction, Weekend Retreat
Powerful essays and memoirs stretch beyond the lives and events they depict. In this workshop, from Friday, May 15th through Sunday, May 17th, you'll explore several techniques for expanding the dimensions of your creative nonfiction, including speculation, research, structural invention, and stylistic innovation. We'll take inspiration from authors such as Jo Ann Beard, Ross Gay, Maxine Hong Kingston, Claudia Rankine, and Jesmyn Ward. We’ll aim to challenge and surprise ourselves while weaving the universal with the personal in captivating ways.
This workshop combines discussion with a significant amount of writing. Students are asked to bring the draft of an essay, memoir excerpt, or hybrid piece to work on.
An optional manuscript consultation is available for an additional fee.
